We have a bumper edition of Auction Action this time round. The last few months have been a bit hit and miss, but October was a very good month for those who collect Hull City themed polyester, so let’s get stuck in… (writes Mike Carter)

This long sleeved 2008/09 away shirt that was issued to Bryan Hughes was listed as a buy it now at £99.99, with the best option available to potential buyers. A deal was executed by a friend of HCK, who picked up this shirt for the brilliant price of £80.

Eagle eyed eBayers would have noticed this 2010/11 away shirt. It is printed with Solano and 24 on the back and sold for just £12.50. If you look closely above the name you’ll see the remnants of the Neil Hudgell Solicitors sponsor, which would imply this shirt was in fact player issue, however it has clearly seen better days. We think this is one that will likely resurface!

This ‘player issue’ 2012/13 Sone Aluko home shirt in size XL has sold a few times recently. It sold in September, for likely around £40, however we didn’t cover it in Auction Action. In hindsight, we should have as it reappeared again in October. The first time it sold at auction for £64.51, before being relisted by the same seller for £60, with the best offer option in play, which it eventually sold by. It’s hard to imagine Aluko wearing a shirt that is extra-large, but it ‘could’ have been a kitman spare, though could is doing some heavy lifting there.

A 2016/17 David Meyler home shirt worn against Manchester United sold for £81 at auction. The seller had included the price they paid in June 2020 of £119.99, so they’ve taken just over a 30% hit on this one. For anyone looking for a shirt from the 2016/17 season, this would have been perfect. A solid player, a known game and a good price. A very good trio indeed!

The remembrance fixture is coming up so we’ll be reporting on the poppy shirt auctions soon, but October was the resale of an old poppy shirt. This 2017/18 home shirt with added poppy applique, issued to Kamil Grosicki, was listed at auction with a start price of £60, before being sold to an offer before the listing was completed.

We’ll move on to the replica listings now, and this 1997/98 primary shirt in size XL sold for before the listing was completed. It was originally listed at £79.99, but once again, the commonly used feature of best offer was executed to end the listing early.

We’ve covered a lot of 1999/00 home shirts whilst doing Auction Action. It is one of the most readily available shirts from the late 90s, in fact. Since we started keeping records, we’ve seen 14 listings! This one in size medium sold for £119.99, which compared to other sales is on the high end of the scale, with the biggest fee being paid £139.99, and the lowest a bargain £27.

Staying in 1999/00 we have an away shirt in size large that sold for £75. This is very much consistent with what our historical records told us.

This 2014/15 third shirt in size XXL sold for £53 at auction. A further sign of third shirts holding their value, even before longevity would class them as retro. We have further examples of this coming up too…

Another third shirt is up next, and it is from the 2015/16 promotion season. This sized medium shirt sold for £52, which is more than it would have been sold at originally in 2015.

The final third shirt we have for you is from 2016/17, the infamous ‘Cactus Purple’. The listing finished at £34.55 which for a size small at resale, is probably a good price.

Printed replicas remain popular and this Tom Huddlestone 2016/17 home shirt in size XL wasn’t listed for long before the best offer option was used.

This 2018/19 home shirt, also in XL but printed with Campbell #25, sold for £26 at auction.

A 2022/23 home shirt with added Ozan Tufan #7 in XL also sold with the best offer option after being listed to start at £25.

There was quite a lot of chatter about Kappa Retro jackets in October. The club launched them in limited numbers, with an all but immediate sell out in all popular sizes. With that, comes people chancing their arm on the resale market. We have seen one that sold for £150, which nets over 100% profit for the seller, but there was also another listing where a few people had a little bit of fun…
