Auction Action – May 2025

Early in May the Tigers brought a pretty wretched season to a close witha 1-1 draw at Portsmouth, which thankfully proved enough to retain our Championship status. The rest of May has been about recalling better years, such as the events of the 24th of May 2008 and the 28th May 2016.

But eBay never sleeps, and our gaze upon it’s Hull City themed offerings is relentless. So here’s what the month of May had to offer…
(writes Mike Carter)

Our first listing takes us back 10 years, to 2014/15. when the Tigers lost their place in the Premier League after playing in UEFA sanctioned competition earlier in the season. This home shirt which was listed as being worn by Daws against his former club Tottenham Hotspur on 23rd November, was listed for and sold at £130. Looking into the seller’s profile, they have over 3800 positive eBay feedback ratings, tracking at 100% positive. This gives credibility to the seller and the item in our book!

The second player’s issue shirt sees us in a more recent time. That’s because it was issued for the recently completed 2024/25 season. This pink modified goalkeeper’s shirt was issued to on-loan shotstopper Carl Rushworth. Rushworth appeared not to be a fan of the long-sleeved GK shirts at The Tigers and had them altered and shortened. This one was listed at £156.72, but did potentially sell using the best offer option.

Whenever a retro shirt is reproduced, it usually has a knock-on effect on the pricing and demand of the original. This is probably what happened here with this 1990/92 away shirt by Matchwinner. The shirt is in excellent condition, but the size is 38/40″, the equivalent of a small men’s – so I was shocked to see that it sold for £135.91! We always say timing is everything, which feels very apt for this seller with this shirt.

This 1992/93 home shirt by Matchwinner is one of the reasons we started to track sales prices during lockdown. We saw replica versions of this shirt sell for upwards of £500 in a time that people had more disposable income due to many social activities being suspended. It doesn’t quite reach those heights these days, but still £338.22 for something that may have just been stuck in a wardrobe is a very good return for the seller.

A Hull City goalkeeper shirt by Avec from 1999/2000 was available for £83.92. A shirt there can’t be too many of around, really. There is plenty of bobbling to the shirt, but some TLC and I’m sure it could be salvaged by its new owner.

This 2000/01 home shirt by Avec in size large sold in May. A shirt that is 25 years old and in excellent condition sold for £89.99. It was certainly a premium price paid for this one, but the condition will have likely been a defining factor in that.

Third shirts are ace! We love them at HCK HQ and this one from 2021/22 (‘Deep Lagoon and Medieval Blue, by Umbro) is one we really like the look of. This one in size large sold for £21.52, a reasonable amount for a shirt that isn’t old enough to be retro nor new enough to be current.

Ian Ashbee is a cult hero to Hull City supporters, so it isn’t a surprise that someone would buy a 2004/05 home shirt by Diadora printed with Ashbee #4 and added competition patches. I guess the sizing could have played a part, but the surprising factor is that it only cost its new owner £21.52. Especially when you consider the next items we’re going to cover…

Ray Parlour only played 15 games for Hull City, but that could somehow make the ‘Romford Pele’ a desirable acquisition to someone’s replica shirt collection. This 2006/07 home shirt by Diadora in XL, applied with Parlour #14 and competition patches, sold for £104.71, almost 5 times that of the Ashbee shirt!

Another shirt where the size didn’t affect the sale price is this 2008/09 goalkeeper jersey by Umbro printed with Myhill and #1. It was listed at £95.99 by a seller in Poland and sold for the asking price.

Our final shirt, before a bonus item is this 2009/10 home shirt by Umbro printed with Bullard and #21. This shirt is also a size small and sold for £69.99. It is possible that this shirt was mistaken for a player issue shirt, due to the pro-sized competition patches and name and number appliqués being used. However, this wasn’t uncommon, and Bullard wore a larger-sized shirt.

The final listing we have to share with you is a vintage Hull City Matchwinner Manager’s coat! I’ve not seen one of these available before, so I was hyper interested in tracking its progress. It attracted bids from 4 bidders who battled it out with the winner paying £56.78 for it, a total much less than I thought it would sell for!

That’s all for May, we’ll be back in July with June’s Hull City offerings! #CaveatEmptor
