Auction Action – November 2024

November. Remembered for more than just the fifth and what occurred in 1605, as it’s the month of poppy appliques on shirts and their subsequent auctions (writes Mike Carter)

Since 2009. when City first had be-poppied shirts, an annual feature for kit geeks is the sale of shirts from our dedicated Remembrance fixture(s), which in 2024 was against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday 10th November. The Netherlands based site matchwornshirt.com still takes care of auctioned off many club’s shirts.

Surprisingly the item that commanded the highest fee wasn’t even a shirt from the game; a signed shirt with poppy applique, which we must admit, has been nicely framed, sold for £500! The top earner in terms of playing shirts was the shirt worn by Charlie Hughes. His shirt sold for £444.

The only other to break the £400 barrier was worn by Abdüs Ömür. If we compare these back to the 2023/24 season, when the feel-good factor surrounding the Tigers was much higher, shirts worn in the Remembrance fixture against Huddersfield Town sold for much more. In fact, 8 shirts sold for more than the £444 paid for the most expensive just 12 months later, with Liam Delap’s and Jacob Greaves’ shirts both reaching the £700 mark.

The scorer of Hull City’s goal against WBA, the Brazilian-Italian João Pedro finished at £369, with Gustavo Puerta and Cody Drameh’s selling forfetching £358 and £356, respectfully.

Here are the final sale prices for rest of the assemblage.

Ivor Pandur – £334
Alfie Jones – £331
Xavier Simons – £331
Regan Slater – £322
Lewie Coyle – £321
Kasey Palmer – £252
Chris Bedia – £216
Ryan Longman – £205
Ryan Giles – £182
Doğukan Sinik – £182
Sean McLoughlin – £182

In my opinion, the evidence points to the on-field issues making the shirts less appealing this time around.

These weren’t the only match shirts available in November though, so let’s get stuck into those now.

A 2013/14 George Boyd away shirt by adidas was listed as an auction with a start price of £75. The best offer feature was applied to this listing, and was used before someone made the opening bid. We believe the value paid was around £150.

One of Michael Dawson’s 2015/16 home shirts by Umbro was listed as a buy it now for £100. It didn’t hang around long before someone paid the asking price and secured themselves a new addition. There appears to be a printing issue on the reverse, where the Neil Hudgell sponsor has been applied, this could be a great marker for the buyer if they choose to try and photo match it.

On replica shirt sales, and in a similar fashion to October, there were quite a few sales of the 2024/25 Anniversary fourth shirt by Kappa. Shirts ranging from medium to 3XL have sold for values as far up as £109.99 for a medium. There was two available in size large which sold for £95 and £100, along with an XL that sold for £100. What we did find quite interesting was that a 3XL sold for just £41, £14 lower than it’s retail value! This came fairly early in the month, too.

To close we’ve got a fair cool and unique item to share. This circa 1990-92 Matchwinner drill top was listed as an auction, starting at 99p. It captured the imagination of five bidders who battled it out to win the auction. The final sale price was pushed all the way up to £103.11 after a weeks’ worth of digital footfall.

That’s your lot for this month, we’ll see you at the start of 2025 for the final month of 2024’s offerings.
