September 2024 was a mostly enjoyable month for the Tigers, if you overlook the abysmal 90 minutes against Sheffield United, that is. The month ended with us enjoying back-to-back wins by a combined score of 7-2. So that’s what heart attack football is… (writes Mike Carter)
For the first time, Hull City released a fourth kit in a single season. It is an Anniversary Kit to mark 120 years of Hull City Association Football Club. This kit was worn as a one-off against Cardiff. Expect to read more about this in the next few editions of Auction Action!
Following on from those 120th anniversary game celebrations, let’s see what City garments from throughout our more recent history went under the virtual hammer…

The first shirt we’ll cover is probably the best. It is a match-worn, early 1993/94 home shirt by Matchwinner, that was patched over with Pelada logos (after the Matchwinner agreement was cancelled), with a number 7 patch on the back.
When it was listed, it was tough to predict what it would sell for. It was listed with a start price at auction of £299.99, so the seller was well aware of what they had. It took the fancy of 4 bidders who battled it out, pushing the end price up to £460.
A few years back, pandemic lock-downs sparked a shirt sale boom, and some original replica versions of this shirt sold for a similar amount. So to get a match-worn version now for £460 could be seen as quite reasonable.

The one player shirt we had to cover was a corker, but now we move into the replica market…
One seller features a lot during this edition of Auction Action. It appears they’ve had a good clear out of replica shirts from the 1980s and 1990s. Each one is fetching at least £96! The next 5 shirts where all sold by ‘gman_on_tour’ on eBay. ‘gman’ boasts a 100% feedback rating, so previous buyers must be happy with their purchases!
Let’s get started! First up is their 1982/83 away shirt by Admiral in size small that sold for £96. There is some minor damage to the shirt, including on the care label, but overall it’s in good condition for a shirt 40+ years old.

The shirt that commanded the highest sale price of the five was a 1990/92 away shirt by Matchwinner, that sold for £172 after 24 bids were placed by 12 bidders. This was most likely the most sought-after shirt in September.

Also available was a 1992/93 away shirt by Matchwinner in size medium. This one setback it’s new owner £132! We all love that jacquard, right?

Pelada took over manufacturing of City shirts in 1993 and their first away shirt offering was for the 1993/94 season. The jade coloured shirt is one that remains popular to this day, so the £149 paid will have been well worth it for its new owner.

City released a special edition shirt in 1994/95 by Pelada that never saw match action, but that doesn’t stop people throwing money at it 30 years on. We’ve seen this sell for varying prices of late, but £147 is firmly in the middle ground for what we have logged.

Now that we’ve finished with “gman” we move into the 21st century. An away shirt from 2000/01 by Patrick, in size XL was listed at and sold for £40.

A shirt we don’t cover too much made the cut this month, and it is a 2018/19 away shirt by Umbro in size medium. Listed at £23 or best offer, the shirt featured dual competition patches and sold shortly after being listed, likely using the best offer feature.

As previously mentioned, City have a fourth kit for the 2024/25 season. Originally the shirt was released as ‘limited edition’, with just 1904 adult shirts being made available. With such demand comes people buying to immediate sell, to capitalise on the limited numbers and popularity.
The valuation of these may dwindle since it has since been announced more stock will be available. That hasn’t stopped the odd person listing them, and so far, we’ve seen a 2XL shirt sell for £200 and a large sell for £150 (or best offer). There is a third shirt to sell, however the photo shows a medium, but the listing says large. This one sold for £73 on the final day of the month, after the news of another batch had fully settled.

For when one 2008/09 home shirt printed with Windass and the number 9 isn’t enough, strangely enough, there was two available in September with quite the contrast in price, too. The first is size 3XL and appears to have pro-sized letters and number applied, sold for just £10.50.
The second, this time in size 2XL appears to have replica sized letters and number used sold for £39.98. For the sake of £30, I think I’d rather have a baggy shirt, but that’s just thrifty me…

You may have to make your own mind up about this one. Is it a printed replica or is it a player worn shirt? For arguments sake, we’ve placed this with the replica shirts. The fact it sold for just £22.54, makes me think that not enough people were convinced to properly have a go at winning this shirt.
Printed with Quinn and 29, if it is a player specification shirt, someone may have just landed the bargain of the year!

The final shirt we have for you this month is a 2022/23 away shirt, the final by Umbro in size large, printed with Tetteh and his squad number. The shirt was listed at £30 with the best offer feature active.
That’s it for September, see you again next month, and remember… CAVEAT EMPTOR!
