Auction Action – May 2024

The 2023/24 domestic football season is in the history books now, but Auction Action doesn’t have an off season. We’re back with a look at the best of the online sales of Hull City polyester in May! (writes Mike Carter)

There was just the one player worn shirt for us to cover in May, and it was worn by African Cup of Nations winner, Jean-Michael Seri. This 2022/23 third shirt (by Umbro) worn by Seri at Blackpool sold for £175, which is at the high end of the usual valuation we would tie to a shirt like this, however… Seri.

One shirt that was never used in match action was this 1994/95 limited edition shirt by Pelada. One of the OGs from the 1990s, this fetched £170.85 at auction in May. The shirt is in size XL, which when looking for the best resale value is an ideal size, and that has been shown here.

A pair of shirts from 2001/02 is up next. The first is home shirt with long sleeves in size XL. It sold for £20, which feels like a really good price and pick up for its new owner.

The second, listed by the same seller, is an away shirt, also in size XL and fetched almost double that the home did, after 6 bidders placed 10 bids before it finished up at £36.

We take a huge leap forward now to 2016/17, to take a look at this third shirt in XXL. It was listed at £29.99, which may have said “priced to sell fast” as that is what it was and what it did.

Staying with third shirts, and this 2019/20 third shirt also in XXL sold for £22, three bidders battled for this one. It is a little bit down on what we’ve seen these sell for too. In August 2022 one sold for £40 and again, in February 2024 another sold for £42.80 so maybe the timing was slightly unfortunate for this seller.

This next shirt has been listed as a 2022/23 third shirt, however it could easily be a 2021/22 away shirt too. It isn’t carrying either of the sponsors, which would be a dead giveaway. The appeal of sponsor-less shirts is something some fans clamour for, so this would have been right up their street. A buy it now price of £29.99 meant it didn’t hang around long, and for a popular shirt in a popular size (XXL), I think the seller may have undersold themselves here.

Next, we have a couple of printed replica shirts. Firstly, is this 2010/11 away shirt in size XXL, printed with (Matty) Fryatt and his squad number, 12. A very modest £22.99 was paid for a shirt that looks in good condition from the images, and also includes npower Championship competition patches.

The final shirt we’ll cover in this edition is this 2018/19 home shirt with the addition of (Fraizer) ‘Campbell 25’ on the reverse, and Sky Bet Championship sleeve patches. It was a return some supporters thought would never happen. Talking of returns, this one returned a tidy £30 for its previous owner.

The Kappa Retro jackets released during the 2023/24 are still holding their value. This amber version in size XXL sold for £80. This was at auction, but it finished at the start price with just one bid being received.

That’s your lot. See you next month, and CAVEAT EMPTOR!
