Welcome to Auction Action, the monthly round-up of the Hull City memorabilia that recently changed hands via online auction sites, with a particular focus on polyester garb. This month we have another fine collection of match-worn, replica and printed replica shirts that went under the virtual hammer in March 2024 (writes Mike Carter)

Starting with match-worns: Eagle eyed eBayers will have spotted this Angus MacDonald 2017/18 away by Umbro match-worn shirt. It wasn’t listed as match-worn, however, it has all the features you’d expect of one…the full size name and number typeface (including the hugely rare small case C), the sleeve patches, the back of shirt sponsor and, since we own another of MacDonald’s shirts we know it’s the correct size. It sold for £68.54 after 8 bidders placed 13 bids trying to secure a new addition. A bargain.

The next two shirts were both listed by the same seller, who told anyone who messaged him that he’d just retired after many years working for Burnley and was selling off kept shirts acquired over the years ahead of emigrating abroad. First up is a Tobias Figueiredo 2022/23 primary shirt by Umbro, lacking the Efes sponsorship on the back of the shirt. This tracks as the Burnley away game was played on 16th August, before the Efes sponsorship deal was announced in mid-September.
The shirt sold for just £73.59, which probably has more to do with the regard in which the defender was held in than the lack of a back of shirt sponsor which might have caused some to question the shirt’s provenance.

Also listed by the seller was this Oscar Estupiñán 2022/23 primary shirt, only this time the Efes applique was on the back, suggesting it was picked up after the return match at the MKM Stadium. This shirt sold for £133.74, almost twice that of the Figueiredo. Granted, Oscar had a better time at City than Tobias, so there is that factor to consider too, however the addition of the sponsor may have played a part in lending greater credibility to the listing.

Moving into the replica market now and this 1984-86 home shirt by Admiral sold for a likely fee of around £149.99. The best offer option was executed on this listing meaning that we don’t have a true value that we can bring to you. For the size, which is 29-31”, it is effectively a child’s shirt, the seller has done well to command a fee anywhere near the asking price.

This 2002/03 change (or if you like 2003/04 third) shirt by Patrick in size large was listed for £64.99 and sold for that price. Graded at 8/10 by Hull based That Vintage Football Shirt the shirt appears to be in a good condition for its age.

The first ever black Tigers shirt was the 2003/04 change shirt by Patrick. This one was listed as an auction and finished for the very reasonable price of £26 for a shirt in size large.

Third shirts sales intrigue us on AA, because they’re typically made in small numbers compared to primary and change shirts and so tend to hold their value. This 2017/18 third shirt by Umbro, better known by it’s main Pantone colour of ‘Navy Peony’ ’ sold for just £20 in XXL!
A little bit of digging around showed us it was listed at auction for just £6, with a buy it now price of £20. It was listed at 10:21PM on a Monday night and sold at 4:01AM on the Tuesday morning. The seller, in our opinion, has massively undersold themselves, both on price and by timing, listing the item at a time when few from the target market will be looking.

Moving into the printed replica market and we have some more great listings to share. This 2010/11 home shirt by adidas, in XL with the added name and number of Slovenian talisman Robert Koren, sold for £79.99. A price that we would deem to be quite high for a replica, considering we’ve covered match-worn shirts that have sold for less this month, but it doesn’t stop there…

£76.49 was the price that some paid for a 2016/17 change shirt by Umbro, in size Large with the name and number of current England International Harry Maguire applied. Once again, we feel this is on the high end of its cost spectrum, but each to their own!

The next two feel much more reasonable to us and we will start with this 2017/18 primary shirt by Umbro with the name and number of David Meyler applied. It appears that the best offer option was used here, and for a shirt in size medium a price of around £44.99 seems fine.

The last shirt we will cover in March’s Auction Action is this 2018/19 primary shirt by Umbro in size large, with the name and number of Jarrod Bowen. £50 was enough to win this listing which in comparison with some of the other shirts sold this month it feels very reasonable.
That’s your lot for another month, and don’t forget; “caveat emptor”.
