Auction Action – November 2023

November is done, and we’re already headlong into December. Before we know it, it will be Christmas, naturally a time for giving and receiving. Yet every month is Kitmas to kitgeeks, so let’s see what went under the virtual hammer in November… (writes Mike Carter)

Staring with match worn/issued shirts, a match-specification home shirt from City’s first Premier League season in 2008/09, believed to be issued toor worn by Dutchman George Boateng sold for up to £71.09 last month. The best offer option was exercised, meaning we are unable to provide an exact sales price on this shirt.

On to 2012/13, and this promotion season home shirt issued to Robbie Brady was listed at £49.99, but sold with the best offer feature. We can reveal it sold for £35, after the buyer informed us of the successful offer. The shirt is lovely, however there is some damage to the sleeve patches which is very difficult to explain. Take a look for yourself, and see what you think…

Another shirt to sell with the best offer feature is this 2022/23 Ozan.Tufan home shirt. The final value of this one is almost impossible to guess. It was listed as an auction with a £50 start price, so the offer must have been enough to tempt the seller to end the auction very shortly after it was listed.

We move into the replica market now, and it was a good month for what you could term ‘premium’ replicas,  those which have consistently sold at high prices. One of the rarer shirts from the Nineties is the 1990-92 away shirt by Matchwinner, and this one in size 42/44 attracted the attention of 7 bidders which took it to a final price of £143.31, after initially starting at £19.99.

The word bargain isn’t often attached to authentic tiger stripe shirts from the early Nineties, but one buyer must be delighted with their pick up. This 1992/93 home shirt in size medium was snapped up for a buy it now price of £95. This is the cheapest size medium OG that we have recorded on Auction Action. Was this an own goal by the seller? Here’s a juxtaposition…

Another 1992/93 home shirt in size medium was listed at auction and sold for a whopping £410, after 4 bidders pushed the end price over 400% higher than the other that sold in November! It did cross my mind that these two could be the same shirt, but a quick glance over the images proves that this isn’t the case.

The 1993/94 approximation of tiger stripes by Pelada is another shirt that has sold well over the years, and XL is a sought after size. This one was listed at £249.99, but someone came in with a best offer to secure the shirt, 5 days in to a 7-day auction. Once again, we don’t know the end price, but I suspect it will have been higher than the start price.

Another shirt from the same season was available, a 1993/94 away shirt in XL sold using the best offer feature too, just over 24 hours after it was listed at auction with a start price of £129.99.

The best offer feature is well used, as any reader of Auction Action will be able to tell you, so this shouldn’t surprise you that we have even more on the way! This 1997/98 away shirt in XL was priced with a start price of £119.99, before being sold the following day using the best offer feature.

A shirt that we can actually put a value on is this 1998/99 home shirt in size large. It was listed as a buy it now for £129.99, and that is exactly what someone did! This is roughly what our records say it is worth, so a good deal all round for both parties on this one.

The next shirt is an interesting one. Here at HCK HQ we suspect that this 1999/00 away shirt in size XL is a player issue shirt. These shirts weren’t sold at retail with long sleeves and this is what we have here. A winning bid of £92 was what it took for the buyer to secure this very unique shirt.

Something that is a little unusual for us to cover is a job lot bundle. It isn’t the best way to sell if you want to maximise the value in your collection, but it is great if you want to clear a lot of stuff to the same person, for less than the package is actually worth, due to convenience. We you can have a little nosey at this bundle and what is in it, that sold for £140 in November.

The poppy shirt auctions that were run once again by matchwornshirt.com finished in early December, but since they ran for most of November it makes sense to include them in November’s Auction Action! Jacob Greaves’ poppy shirts have always sold well since his debut for the Tigers and that remained the same in 2023/24, although his shirt sold for £177 more than last year, it still wasn’t enough to make his the most valuable for the second season in a row.

That merit went to Manchester City loanee, Liam Delap. His 92nd minute winner against Huddersfield ensured that his poppy shirt sold for £705! The most we have seen a poppy shirt sell for! In fact, another four players all broke the record of £533 set by Keane Lewis-Potter in 2021. Delap, Greaves, Philogene, and Morton all sold above KLP’s Hull City record figure. The total raised by the Tigers shirts was £8,576, see below for a full run down (in descending order);

Liam Delap – £705
Jacob Greaves – £700
Jaden Philogene-Bidace – £643
Tyler Morton – £561
Ozan Tufan – £514
Lewie Coyle – £500
Cyrus Christie – £467
Jean Michael Seri – £446
Scott Twine – £443
Greg Docherty – £433
Alfie Jones – £427
Poppy shirt in a frame – £396
Sean McLoughlin – £369
Ryan Allsop (SS GK) – £348
Aaron Connolly – £345
Allahyar Sayyadmanesh (Issued) – £341
Ruben Vinagre – £296
Harry Vaughan (Issued) – £288
Matt Ingram ( LS GK Issued) – £187
James Furlong (Issued) – £167

Lastly, it’s been fascinating to see how much the limited edition retro-styled Kappa track tops have gone through on the resale market after selling out quickly at Tiger Leisure. This size small jacket went for £94.

That’s it for November, we’ll review December’s sales in early January. Caveat emptor!
