Auction Action – August 2023

August, the month of hope, when every fan can dream of glory unfolding over the next nine months, even if there is no logical basis for this hope. It’s also a month we get to see the new season’s kit releases in the flesh polyester for the first time. But what about the older shirts, how is the first month of the season for the primary component of classic kits on sale online? Mike Carter covers the best Hull City apparel sales for your memorabilia focused edification…

Firstly, we’ll start with the pick of the bunch. This matchworn 1990/91 home shirt by Matchwinner sold on the final day of the month so snuck its way into the August edition of Auction Action. 10 bidders riffled the end price up to £367 in the final seconds of the auction. This shirt is one of the second batches of matchworns from the 1990/91 season, the first iteration had the maker’s mark and crest outside of the Bonus sponsor patches, with black Matchwinner ‘arrows’ on the outer amber stripe, but the following batch had them in amber embroidery, with both maker mark and crest moving inward on black stripes, matching the construction of the replicas. Number 4 was mostly worn by Neil Buckley, Russ Wilcox and David Mail that season. This shirt had been in Northern Ireland for the last two decades, but now it has been repatriated to H-Town!

This 2008/09 home shirt by Umbro, believed to be match issue or match worn by Caleb Folan, was available for just £45. There is no word in the listing that this is a player shirt, but our eye for player specification shirts at HCK HQ makes us believe this could be. Especially since it is size XXL, which Folan was known to wear. It was listed at just £45 and sold very quickly after being listed. Maybe we weren’t the only ones to think this was player specification…

A price of £78.55 was paid for this 2011/12 Aaron McLean home shirt by adidas. Again, this wasn’t listed as a player’s shirt, but the inclusion of the back of shirt sponsor tells us that this is player specification.

Moving into the replica market now and this 1982/83 home shirt by Admiral in size small sold for £130. The shirt has a #4 stitched on the back of the shirt. This is one that we’ve seen before, and no doubt it will crop up again in the future.

We’ve just covered a player specification 1990-92 home, but now we’ve got a pair of replica versions to cover. The first shirt is a size large and was listed as an auction with a start price of £99. An offer was made to secure the shirt, but sadly, we were unable to confirm what that is.

Also available was another in size XL. This one sold for £149.99, again, very shortly after being listed. Like the matchworn from the same season(s) mentioned earlier, this replica had been in Ireland, the Republic this time, for many years. They really like the 1990-92 home shirt in the Emerald Isle!

Stuart Elliott has cult hero status at Hull City, saying that God told you to join the Tigers then scoring a myriad of goals from the wing will do that. So, there is no surprise this 2004/05 away shirt by Diadora printed with ELLIOTT #7 on the back sold very quickly. It was listed at just £30, but an offer of less was accepted to secure it for its new owner.

From one Cult hero to another, this Dean Windass 2007/08 home shirt by Umbro with competition patches in size XXXL sold for £60. I don’t think there will be many complaints from its new owner, especially when you consider what Dean did in this style of shirt…

Right, that’s your lot for August, meet us here in a month and we’ll go over September’s offerings, and remember… Caveat Emptor!
