Auction Action – March 2023

In Roman times, the ‘ides of March’ was a time for settling up debts, which leaves little money left for polyester purchases. Nowadays the financial year is drawing to a close towards the end of March, and notions of fiscal responsibility just might explain a fairly quiet month for Hull City apparel on auction website eBay, although Tiger Leisure did have some match-worn offerings near the end of March (writes Mike Carter)…

It is becoming quite common now for us to see the exact same shirts featuring in different months of Auction Action. If you can get a shirt for a low price, it could easily be ‘flipped’ by reselling it for modest profit and here we have another example. This David Marshall 2018/19 goalkeeper shirt was listed with a start price of £99.99. However, the listing was ended early after a suitable offer to the seller was made. The first time this shirt sold was in October 2022 when the listing finished at £79.12. You have to imagine there was some nice profit in this one for the seller.

City listed shirts from the FA Cup tie against Fulham on Tiger Leisure during March. This was an unannounced release, meaning you need to be a regular visitor  Tiger Leisure to notice these listings. Match-worn shirts were listed at £150, with match issue shirts being available for £100.  Not all those who played in the game had a shirt available, perhaps they swapped with an opponent. Among those up for grabs were Ingram, Coyle, Elder, Figueredo, McLoughlin (x2),  Woods (x2), Docherty, Simons, Vale and Callum Jones. Notable players with no shirts available were Óscar, Tetteh and Christie.

Moving onto replicas and we had a gem of a shirt from the early 80s. This 1984-86 home shirt (incorrectly listed as 1982/83) by Admiral in size large sold for £288.60. It looks to be in excellent condition for a shirt that is 40 years old, and in a size that would be in our eyes deemed as desirable.

We’re staying in the 1980s for the next two listings, with this 1986-88 home shirt by Admiral in size small. It sold for around £174.99, after the best offer feature was exercised.

The third and final shirt from the 1980s is this 1988/89 away shirt by Matchwinner in size small and sold for £150 after a solo bid secured this jersey.

Matchwinner are making a comeback in 2023, however you can never beat an original, just like this one right here. The 1992/93 away shirt was the counterpart for Matchwinner’s infamous ‘tiger print’ shirt. This change shirt in size large sold for £179.95 after being listed for around a week.

If you were looking for a 1995-97 away shirt by Matchwinner in size XL then you’d have done well to find one better than this one. The condition is great and the price, not too shabby. It sold for the asking price of £140 within 48 hours of being listed which came as no surprise to us.

1997/98 home shirt by Olympic in size XL sold for around £90 in March. Again, this one was sold after a buyer executed a best offer, that was accepted.

The final shirts that are covered in this months Auction Action are all very similar. They are all from the current 2022/23 season and all size 3XL. The first is a home shirt printed with Ozan Tufan on the reverse and sold for £30.

The second is also a home shirt, but this time it is printed with Sayyadmanesh on the back. What is strange about this one, is that Allahyar Sayyadmanesh, plays with Allahyar on the reverse, and not Sayyadmanesh. This could be why this one sold for just £16.56.

The third is an away shirt which has been printed with the already departed Sinik on the reverse and sold for £25.

The final shirt is a third shirt that has been printed with Estupinan on the reverse. Again, similarly to the Allahyar Sayyadmanesh shirt, Estupinan plays with Oscar on the back and not Estupinan. Anyway, that didn’t discourage enough to stop them spending £25 on it.

That’s it for March, April might be when Tiger Leisure put the ‘Together for Turkiye’ patch match-worn shirts used against Preston on sale, we’ll be back early May to confirm that and review what else has sold in April. Remember… Caveat emptor!
