Auction Action – February 2023

February’s Auction Action is a little bit like a team with a solid starting eleven, that’s a bit lacking in depth when you look at the bench. Just eight Hull City shirt sales in the shortest month, but despite it being a fairly quiet month the listings we do have to review should keep your kit taste buds tingling… (writes Mike Carter aka @MikeyCarter90)

For the third time in as many months there has been a matchworn 1995/96 away shirt listed. This time it was a short sleeved #12 substitute shirt and the bidding finished at £256.11, which is around the fee paid for a #15 shirt (£280), but significantly down on the £454 paid for a long sleeved #13, both in December 2022. Are long sleeves worth a £200 premium, well that’s a subjective call and we know the owner of the #12 is very pleased with his long sleever.

This ‘super’ Matty Fryatt 2012/13 away shirt was only listed for a few hours before someone paid the £120.60 asking price for it. The shirt was located in Ukraine, so the visibility on the final price may fluctuate. I was surprised to see this one end so quickly, but we’ve often said that a standard matchworn shirt around the £120 price mark is fair for all parties.

This 2015/16 David Meyler issued/worn home shirt was listed as an auction starting at £99.99, however it was secured by a best offer. I am inclined to believe that it was above the start price. We have seen this shirt previously on Auction Action as it sold for £70.77 back in November.

Remember back in January’s Auction Action where we covered a 2018/19 Jarrod Bowen home shirt? Well, it sold for £291, though it appears that the buyer didn’t follow through on the agreement as it was listed again in February by the same seller. This time it was listed as a buy it now at £285, instead of as an auction with a low start price. The sale of this shirt occurred much quicker than we anticipated.

Another shirt that wasn’t around for long was this 2021/22 Andy Cannon FA Cup shirt match issued for the visit of Everton. It was listed at £100 and sold under eBay’s best offer option. This is also another shirt we have seen sold in the past, back in October 2022 where it sold for £120. Three shirt sales that we’ve covered in the past, all available again during the same month. That might be a record!

It was tough to find some quality replica shirt listings to fill out this months’ Auction Action, but I did find this 1982/83 home shirt which sold for £42. Now even though it is small in size, I feel someone has picked up a bargain here.

This next shirt is a 1995-97 home shirt by Super League that was listed with a buy it now price of £169.99. It sold in the final hours of the final day of the month using the best offer option, which meant it just squeezed in February’s edition, like an 11th hour loan signing!

The last shirt we’ll cover this month is this 2014/15 home shirt, printed with the name of current Scotland Captain, Andy Robertson. The shirt is size XL, so that removed any possibility of it being match issued. Another tell-tale sign is the see-through number set. This shirt originated from outside the UK (Hungary) and sold for around £60.30.
