Living in the past? You bet. While the rest of the world notes the arrival of 2023, for Auction Action that’s a full month away. Here on the pages of Auction Action we’re still in 2022, as Mike Carter closes out the year with the top Hull City shirt sales on online auction websites… (writes Mike Carter, aka @MikeyCarter90)
Starting with match worn/player issue shirts, one seller listed a pair of 1995/96 maroon change shirts during December. The first of those was a #15 short sleeved version in spectacularly good condition, most likely only used in pre-season. It was nonetheless highly sought after, six unique bidders placed a total of 27 bids, eventually pushing the final sale price to £280.
It turns out the seller had some dealings with the club in the late 90s and early 2000s and picked up some shirts that remained after their lifespan of usefulness.
The second 1995/96 away, this time a long-sleeved variant, had #13 on the back, meaning it will have seen some game use as a sub’s shirt. If the #15 is considered ‘highly sought after’, well the long-sleeved variation blew it out the water. A whopping bid of £454 was what it took to secure this item ahead of eight other eight bidders.
Last month we covered a 2000/01 away shirt and I told you to check back for more! There was another 2000/01 change shirt listed, this one worn by Phil Brumwell that had a curious radially arched nameset. It sold for £180 – the exact same as the price paid in November for Mark Atkin’s navy and maroon shirt. Fitting.
This next listing was a part of the HCK collection. A 2007/08 home shirt, which was worn by Dean Marney was let go from the collection for a neat bid of £103.
We cover a lot of replica third shirts on Auction Action, but not too many match issued/worn ones, so this makes a nice change. A 2019/20 third shirt issued to Stephen Kingsley was available for £99.99 or best offer. An offer was accepted for this one, which in my book makes it a solid buy for someone coming in at sub £100.
Moving into the replica market now and this 1986-88 full home kit was available for £12. The kit is a junior size, so would only a fit a young supporter, however, just think how cool a junior Tiger would look in this retro kit!
Here we have another shirt that has had its price hindered by size. This 1989-90 home shirt, which was listed as a medium sold for £90. The chest size is 34″-36″ which feels a bit small for a medium (I suppose it could have shrunk over the years). The condition is great though, the colours have held really well for a shirt that is over 30 years old.
The 1990-92 home shirt is one of my favourites, and this one in size large sold for £169.99 or best offer. Another shirt that is in good condition, minus its label. The sponsor has even held well and is in a great condition. This is usually something that has damage on this style of shirt, but this one is fine.
Our penultimate offering is this 2000/01 home shirt in a size medium. Listed as a buy it now for £99.99 and sold for the asking price. This is a little bit above what we would expect as previous mediums have sold for £80 in April 2022 and £60 in October 2021.
The final shirt of Auction Action in 2022 is a bargain. This 2015/16 away shirt printed with Abel H sold for just £9.99! What a steal for a guy who bagged 20+ goals that season.
That’s your lot for 2022, we’ll see you on the other side in February, and don’t forget… Caveat emptor!
